Facts About Lena Machado
Born in Honolulu's Pauoa Valley in 1903
She was discovered in 1923 by the manager
of a Honolulu radio station
Her parents were singers
Known as "Hawaii's Songbird"
Very popular soprano and Hawaiian style falsetto
singer in the 1930's and 1940's
She wrote more then 60 songs
Her career spanned 50 years
Was one of the most well-known people in the Hawaiian musc world
during her day
She was a solo singer with the Royal Hawaiian Band for many years,
and with them she sang "Aloha Oe" to Hawaii visitors departing
by ship on boat days.
Toured extensively on the mainland U.S. and in Asia and the Pacific
region.
She sang for the King and Queen of Siam, President
Franklin D. Roosevelt, Bing Crosby, Babe Ruth,
and the Prince of Wales before he became King Edward
VIII and later the Duke of Windsor.
Her singing career ended in 1965 when she and
her husband were seriously injured ind an auto crash
on the island of Kauai.
She was inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame in 1995.
Lena Machado died in January of 1974 at age 70.

Her landmark 1962 album has been reissued on CD
and it includes recordings from as early as 1927,
This album won two Na Hoku Hanohano Awards,
one for "Best Anthology Album of the Year" and
one for "Best Liner Notes".
