Master of Percussion and Exotica Sounds

This picture of percussionist and Waitiki exotica band member Lopaka Colon was taken in January of 2009 when Lopaka was performing in Pearl Harbor with Henry Kapono at the 65th anniversary of the USS Missouri Battleship.

  • Born in Hawaii
  • Son of famed percussionist Augie Colon
  • Cousin of Amy Hanaialii and John Cruz
  • Founding member of the Hoku Award winning group Pure Heart
  • Founding member, along with Jake Shimabukuro, of the Hoku Award winning group Colon.
  • Performed with Henry Kapono on the Hoku Award winning album "Wild Hawaiian".

    Lopaka Colon Today
    Lopaka is a member of the Waitiki Exotica Septet, he tours and performs regularly with Henry Kapono, and he has performed with many more of Hawaii's top musicians including Mick Fleetwood's Island Rumours Band, He can often be seen performing with Henry Kapono, on Sunday afternoons, at Duke's Canoe Club at the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach Hotel (contact Duke's at 808-922-2268 for dates and times).

    Lopaka Colon performs percussion and exotic bird and animal sounds for the exotica band known as the "Waitiki 7". The band features musicians from Boston and Hawaii including Abe Lagrimas, Jr., Randy Wong, Lopaka Colon, Tim Mayer, Zaccai Curtis, Jim Benoit, and Helen Liu.
